With an installation of the art performance »Maueramt« by Sheryl Oring and photographs from »Everyday Life in the GDR« by the artist Thomas Billhardt, the exhibitions set their focus beyond the incidents of the Cold War, and on the life and experiences of Germans from both the East and the West and their memories of the division and reunification of Germany.

Thomas Billhardt »Everyday Life in the GDR«

The photographer Thomas Billhardt gained popularity in the GDR mostly for the photographs he took in Vietnam and Palestine. His photos have been displayed in various international photography exhibitions in New York, Berlin, Santiago de Chile, and Paris, including at the UNICEF exhibition »Children of the World« (1988) in New York. Many of his works have been published in  magazines like Stern, Spiegel, and TIME.

Starting on November 7, 2014, the Museum THE KENNEDYS will display a range of more than 60 photographs which illustrate the everyday life and the political milieu of the GDR and East Berlin from the 1950s until the fall of the Wall. The multifacetted selection shows famous Berlin locations over the course of time, as well as impressions of official visits from politicians such as Mikhail Gorbachev and Fidel Castro.

Sheryl Oring »Maueramt«

November 7 – December 30, 2014

On the occasion the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Museum THE KENNEDYS presents two special exhibitions starting November 7, 2014.

The american artist often relies on the participation of the public and tries to create social images through the linkage of old and new media types, which she then presents in art installations. She is assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and already has displayed her work in New York, Boston, and Berlin.

Starting on November 7, 2014, the museum will display the result of her performance series »Maueramt«, which she executed in September and October of this year on the occasion of the approaching 25th anniversary of the fall of the Wall. During the performance, the artist asked pedestrians questions, such as »What comes to your mind, when you think about the Wall?« or »What should the world remember about the Wall?« On site, Oring recorded the spontaneously dictated answers with an old typewriter and stamped the statements herself. These »border stripes,« with insights from Berlin, Germany, and the world on the topic »Berlin Wall« were collected for the installation at the Museum THE KENNEDYS.

»Angela Merkel: 60 Years – 60 Images«

 July 17 – October 4, 2014

In celebration of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s 60th birthday, the Museum THE KENNEDYS displays a portrait exhibition by the photographer Daniel Biskup, starting July 17, 2014. The 60 photographs portray the chancellor’s political stages and offer a look into the busy life of a politician.

The photographer, Daniel Biskup, born in Bonn in 1962, has been capturing images of Angela Merkel for over 15 years. With his photographs, the former student of politics and history seeks to capture exactly those moments which will survive in the historic context. He has not only shot portraits of famous politicians like George Bush, Mikhail Gorbachev, Helmut Kohl, and Vladimir Putin, but also of celebrities such as Karl Lagerfeld, Claudia Schiffer, and Bill Gates.
